 we dined in the grill room on 3 nov. i had lemon sole for main course i asked for a fish knife as you would, i was told we don't have fish knives. i find this quite poor.  large airy room. liked the high ceilings. there was an air of grandeur and everything seemed was on hand. it was easy to find the hotel following those directions provided by the hotel from our online booking. online booking very quick and uncomplicated. the room was very pleasant. the settee was very welcome. it was comfortable to sit and relax on rather than just having the bed. bed comfortable. bedlinen clean and general presentation very good. lighting was suitable for reading in bed. i was not aware of any surrounding noise from other rooms but there were not a lot of guests at the time. the meal in the evening was very good and varied choice. prices for meal average but food above average. reseentation of the food good. very personal service.i noticed that a 10% service charge was included on the restaurant bill. i tend to leave a tip of 10% in cash on the table so that the people serving get the tip. i should like to have it confirmed that this service charge is actually passed on to the waiters/waitresses and kitchen staff. fantastic setting, fabulous building. very disappointed with quality of service in the cocktail bar. in the afternnon we ordered tea and cake. we had to ask for serviettes and forks!!on returning to the hotel in the evening ( not late, the bar was open and occupied) we asked for a coofee. we were told there were no coffee pots or mugs as they had a busy day!these experiences took the edge off the hotel experience. i would expect more from a hotel of your style. very large spacious bedrooms, comfortable bed, huge bathroom with good facilities, good decor.  very small public rooms, the bar was so small and because of functions being held we were unable to get into the bar to get a drink let alone find a seat, grill room at breakfast very small a queue to get seated. food selection at breakfast was poor for hotel grading ie, pastry and bread selection was non existant, scrambled egg was grey, watery and tasted awful. bacon run out and was not replenished for over 30 mins, probably the worst hotel breakfast i have ever had. room service the previous evening i had a burger which was dry and overcooked and the accompanying fries were also overcooked and the meal arrived stone cold. the hotel and grounds i thought were impressive, lovely rooms, cramped and small public rooms, poor food,very poor value for money!!! i thought when booking this hotel that this was a perfect choice, good 4* accomodation, no information provided beforehand would have prepared me for the dissapointment i experienced. i understand that when hotels have functions on and they do become very busy, but i feel the amount of function rooms and function guests impacted on the other guest facilities. due to this my husband and i retired to our room at 8.30pm ordered dissapointing room service and watched tv. spacious room, clean and comfortable this is a lovely well run hotel, we stayed in an executive room which was spacious with a large bathroom and nice view overlooking the gardens, we did feel a little rushed in the morning- check out was supposed to be at 11am, there was a bill pushed under the door at 7am and room service knocking at 10am. we could only book a table at the grill room as the other restaurants were fully booked which was a bit disappointing as we booked the room three weeks in advance, but overall we enjoyed our stay. very helpful staff. very good value â£20 for 3 course evening meal. bar prices were very expenisve. â£7 for a white wine spritzer (because they charge full price for a glass of wine and a soda water) is substantially more than even london prices.
